On Tuesday, June 18, 2024, the House of Representatives, through its Press Bureau, announced the endorsement of a series of recommendations aimed at addressing issues with West Africa Forestry Development Incorporated (WAFDI) in District 2, Grand Bassa County.
The recommendations emerged from an in-depth examination led by the newly formed Committee on Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries. This committee was charged with investigating a formal grievance submitted by WAFDI to the House via the Concession Review Committee.
The grievance alleged that District 2 Representative Clarence T.J. Banks had obstructed WAFDI’s operations, resulting in significant financial setbacks.
In response to the committee’s findings, the House has called for the appearance of WAFDI, the Forestry Development Authority (FDA), the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning, and the Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA). These agencies are expected to provide detailed reports in compliance with the 2006 National Forestry Reform Law, with particular attention to Chapters 3 and 4.
A key focus for the House is the stringent regulation of illegal logging activities, which is viewed as crucial for fostering good governance and curbing corruption.
The House also highlighted the importance of land reform and industrial development, while stressing the critical need to protect forests and natural ecosystems throughout the country.
In addition, WAFDI has been instructed to submit a copy of its Memorandum of Understanding with the local communities within its operational zones.
This directive coincides with planned visits to other reported locations where logging activities may have negatively impacted local agriculture and natural habitats.
Simultaneously, the House has tasked the FDA with providing a comprehensive overview of WAFDI’s operations, reflecting a unified effort to ensure adherence to regulations and the promotion of environmental responsibility.
As the House awaits feedback from the aforementioned entities, it remains committed to tackling the environmental and economic challenges associated with forestry activities in Grand Bassa County and beyond.
