Over 200 workers of the National Elections Commission (NEC) in Liberia have staged a major protest at the Commission’s headquarters in Monrovia, demanding Chairperson Davidetta Browne-Lansanah settle their 12 months of unpaid insurance benefits and salary arrears. The workers are also calling for an audit of the NEC’s budget, particularly the $8 million surplus from the election budget.
The staff have expressed dissatisfaction with the leadership, accusing them of financial mismanagement and poor labor practices. They claim that despite the successful conduct of the 2023 elections, their benefits were cut, and they have not received the promised payments. The workers are demanding immediate action to address their grievances, including the formation of a committee to determine the payment of their benefits.
