Supreme Court Intervenes: Speaker Koffa’s Removal Halted Amid Political Tensions in Liberia

By: Joshua P. Weahgar

The political crisis began when a faction within the House of Representatives, known as the Majority Bloc, attempted to remove Speaker Koffa from his position. This group, comprising 43 members, accused Koffa of gross corruption and financial mismanagement during his tenure as Deputy Speaker and in his current role. They declared the Speaker’s post vacant and elected Representative Richard Koon as the new Speaker.

Legal Actions

In response, Speaker Koffa and his allies filed a petition with the Supreme Court of Liberia, seeking a Writ of Prohibition to halt the actions of the Majority Bloc. They argued that the sessions held by the Majority Bloc were unauthorized and violated the Liberian Constitution and House Standing Rules.

Supreme Court Ruling

Justice Yamie Gbeisay, presiding in Chambers, initially placed a stay on the proceedings against Koffa but later lifted the writ of prohibition. The court declined to issue the writ, allowing the Majority Bloc to continue their actions. Despite this, Speaker Koffa has vowed not to resign and remains committed to upholding the integrity of the legislative process.

Current Situation

The situation remains tense, with ongoing legal and political maneuvers. Speaker Koffa has emphasized his commitment to the rule of law and legislative integrity, stating that he will pursue further legal actions to assert his rights. The Majority Bloc, on the other hand, continues to push for his removal, creating a significant impasse within the House of Representatives.

This conflict has broader implications for Liberia’s political stability, as it risks paralyzing the government’s ability to function effectively. President Joseph Boakai has remained cautious and neutral, seeking legal consultation to determine the appropriate course of action
