By: Joshua P. Weahgar

Seeds4Liberia Project: Launched in October 2024, this project aims to address challenges in seed quality and accessibility. It focuses on rice, cassava, soybean, coffee, and fish value chains to strengthen food security and economic diversification. The project is expected to produce 6,000 tons of certified rice seeds, aiming to reduce imports by 70% over five years.

National Agriculture Development Plan (NADP)

Launched in July 2024, this six-year plan aims to transform Liberia’s agricultural sector and achieve self-sufficiency in food production. The plan includes strategic investments in agricultural infrastructure, technology, and research to transition from traditional subsistence farming to large-scale, sustainable, mechanized agriculture.

Building Resilient Seed Systems

The Seeds4Liberia Project is part of a broader effort to build resilient seed systems, supported by international partners like the European Union, Africa Rice, and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA).

These initiatives reflect Liberia’s commitment to enhancing its agricultural sector, improving food security, and promoting economic growth.
