The Director General of the National Fisheries and Aquaculture Authority (NaFAA), Madam Emma Metieh Glassco, delivered a motivational lecture to students studying Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences at the University of Liberia Fendell Campus. During her address, she shared her personal journey to becoming the head of the Liberian Fisheries Authority and encouraged students to pursue their academic goals with determination.
Recognizing the challenges faced by students in finding employment after graduation, Madam Glassco assured them that NaFAA is committed to working closely with the private sector to create job opportunities. She emphasized the importance of strengthening private sector participation in the fisheries sector as a key driver of job creation.
NaFAA’s administration has been considering the future of the current batch of students and has identified potential challenges in securing employment within the fisheries sector. Madam Glassco highlighted the need for students to be aware of these challenges and to proactively seek opportunities. She also shared her own experiences of taking risks during her studies, emphasizing that perseverance and determination can lead to success.
To address the lack of job opportunities, NaFAA plans to create an enabling environment for fisheries science graduates by working closely with the private sector. The authority aims to provide internships for students while they are still studying to help them gain practical knowledge before graduation. Additionally, NaFAA is exploring partnerships with non-governmental organizations to provide internship opportunities.
Madam Glassco also highlighted the potential for growth in the fisheries sector and encouraged students to consider specializing in various areas of fisheries sciences. She emphasized the importance of private sector involvement in activities like canning, processing, and aquaculture, which can lead to significant job creation.
NaFAA’s commitment to supporting the fisheries and aquaculture sciences department at the University of Liberia extends beyond job creation. The authority has promised to purchase a bus for students and a vehicle for the Dean of the Department. Furthermore, NaFAA will address other requests made by the students through their leadership.
The chairman of the Department of Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences, Assistant Professor Alvin S. Jueseah, commended NaFAA’s management for providing part-time services to the University. He also highlighted the department’s international links with universities and fisheries organizations.
The Acting Chairman of the UL Fisheries and Aquaculture Sciences Association, Alpheus Boe, encouraged his colleagues to take their studies seriously and to seize the opportunities presented by the fisheries sector. He also made several recommendations, including hiring fisheries experts, providing financial aid, and improving transportation facilities.
